Airsoft guns – the CA8/2 Airsoft sniper rifle (part 2)

Being a G36, the magazines lock together, which is great as you can fix two hi-caps on and have 1000 rounds without extra pouches – that’s a lot of ammo compared to most airsoft bb guns!

It features a unique stock – comfortable, solid and adjustable via the spacers provided. However, I was disappointed to discover that in order to offer that adjustability a large plastic plate is required to be inserted into the stock, using up the hollow space available for another battery.

The fire selector is metal and appears on both sides of the gun. It is quite susceptible to falling off as it’s only held on by a screw onto a flat plate rather that a screwhole, so be careful. Unfortunately this is inherent in the design of the actual weapon. Also being left handed I find it can chafe on my thumb, not a big deal though.

The gearbox is easy to get to. Remove the magazine receiver and rotate the stock away and it’s right there – great for repairs. Unfortunately I have had trouble with the gearbox. It has stopped working twice in the six months I have had it, although it has had heavy usage. Oddly, the reason for the breakages was a blown fuse and was fixed by replacing it, even though the fuses weren’t burnt through…?

Also as previously mentioned, I bought a nunchuck battery for the gun, a large 9.6v 1400mh. Within two games the gearbox was completely burnt out, so we can safely say that these airsoft guns can’t handle 9.6 volts!

Luckily it was still under warranty and the airsoft shop admitted that they should not have supplied that large a battery to me – anything over 8.4v voids the warranty, so be warned!

Although these are superficial issues and the blown gearbox wasn’t my fault, I have chosen to sell this gun on. I figure as the internals are being replaced under warranty it’s the best time to sell before the warranty runs out and I may have to pay for any other repairs.

Also, the gun has given me the tough lesson on preparation. Having spent my whole budget on one gun, if this gun goes wrong at a game day I’m really not left with anything else. As a result I’m spending the money from the sale on three cheap and cheerful clones, an AK74, SVD and an MP5 PDW.

So more pros than cons and fairly so. I’ve really enjoyed this gun, all guns with have cons and for a weed like me it’s been a perfect start to a long airsoft career.
